Experience the best of Maharashtra’s wildlife and heritage on a 15-day journey from Mumbai through Nashik, Tadoba, Pench, Ajanta, Ellora and Pune. Enjoy multiple tiger safaris in Tadoba and Pench, explore ancient Buddhist and rock-cut cave complexes, discover historic temples and heritage landmarks, and return to Mumbai with a private vehicle, safari arrangements and guided experiences.
Day-by-Day Travel Plan
Few itineraries manage to swing between Bengal tigers, rock-cut Buddhist caves, and Mumbai's Marine Drive sunsets without feeling scattered, but this one pulls it off. Garhwal Himalayan Expedition has built this 15-day Maharashtra wildlife and heritage tour around three very different sides of the state, its tiger reserves, its ancient cave temples, and its cities, giving each one enough time to actually land.
Route covered: Mumbai, Nashik, Tadoba, Pench, Ajanta, Ellora, Pune, Mumbai
Recommended setup: Private AC vehicle with a naturalist or local guide throughout.
Days 1-2: Mumbai
Land in Mumbai and settle in, with an easy first evening along Marine Drive, watching the sun drop into the Arabian Sea over what locals call the Queen's Necklace. Day two is a full sweep of the city's heritage side, the Gateway of India, a photo stop outside the Taj Mahal Palace, the colonial lanes of Colaba, and the Victorian Gothic grandeur of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. Crawford Market and a viewing-point stop at Dhobi Ghat round out the afternoon before another evening along Marine Drive.
Day 3: Mumbai to Nashik (about 170 km, 4-5 hours)
The drive to Nashik sets up a day of temple visits: Trimbakeshwar Temple, Panchavati, Ram Kund, Sita Gufa, and Kalaram Temple all carry deep spiritual significance in this part of Maharashtra. Evenings by the Godavari River or around the local market are a gentle way to close things out.
Day 4: Nashik to Tadoba (about 450-500 km, 9-11 hours)
This is a long travel day, but a scenic one; rural Maharashtra unfolds through farmland and shifting Deccan landscape on the way to Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve. Once you arrive, checking in and meeting your naturalist for a safari briefing sets the tone for the days ahead.
Days 5-6: Tadoba Tiger Safaris
Two full days of safaris here, mornings before sunrise and, where possible, a second run in the afternoon. Sightings can include Bengal tigers, leopards, sloth bears, gaur, sambar, spotted deer, wild boar, dhole, and marsh crocodile, alongside a strong variety of birdlife. Your naturalist reads the forest as much as spots animals directly; alarm calls, paw prints, and fresh tracks all factor into the search. Evenings are relaxed, sometimes with an optional photography session or a look at the day's images together.
Day 7: Tadoba to Pench (about 250-300 km, 6-7 hours)
The drive to Pench Tiger Reserve moves through more of central India's forest belt. After checking in and a safari briefing, the evening is left open to simply enjoy the resort's quiet, forested surroundings.
Day 8: Pench Tiger Safari
Pench carries a certain literary weight; this is the landscape widely believed to have inspired Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. An early morning safari brings chances to spot tigers, leopards, dhole, sloth bear, gaur, sambar, chital, wild boar, and crocodiles, with a second safari or resort-based nature experience possible later in the day depending on availability.
Day 9: Pench to Ajanta or Aurangabad
A long travel day, seven to nine hours or more depending on final accommodation and road conditions, carries you west into the Ajanta and Aurangabad region. The changing scenery through central and western Maharashtra makes the drive worthwhile in its own right. Check in and rest once you arrive.
Day 10: Ajanta Caves
A full day at the Ajanta Caves, one of India's most remarkable UNESCO World Heritage sites. Ancient Buddhist monasteries, chaitya halls, intricate sculpture, and centuries-old frescoes fill this rock-cut complex, and it easily rewards a slow, unhurried pace. Return to Aurangabad in the evening.
Day 11: Ellora Caves and Daulatabad Fort
Ellora brings together three religious traditions, Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain, carved into a single stretch of rock. The undisputed highlight is the Kailasa Temple, carved entirely from a single rock face, a feat that's genuinely hard to process in person. Afterward, Daulatabad Fort adds a different kind of history, sweeping fortifications, old gateways, and panoramic views from its higher points. Return to Aurangabad for the night.
Day 12: Aurangabad to Pune (about 235 km, 5-6 hours)
Check into Pune and use the evening to explore the old city, with plenty of good food and a lively market scene nearby if you're up for it.
Day 13: Pune Heritage and Culture
A full day covering Pune's history, from the Peshwa-era Shaniwar Wada to the Aga Khan Palace, an important site tied to India's freedom movement. The Pataleshwar Cave Temple, the Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum, and the well-known Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple round out the day. Evenings are free for shopping and sampling more of Pune's food scene.
Day 14: Pune to Mumbai (about 150 km, 3-4 hours)
Depending on timing, an optional stop en route can include the ancient Karla Caves or the hill stations of Lonavala and Khandala in the Western Ghats. Back in Mumbai, spend a final evening around Marine Drive and Colaba before dinner.
Day 15: Departure from Mumbai
A relaxed final morning, with time for last-minute shopping or a short bit of sightseeing depending on your flight schedule, before a private transfer to Mumbai Airport or the railway station closes out the trip.
