Frequently Asked Questions

We have answered the most common questions about our tours, pilgrimages, and trekking services below. If you need more information, feel free to reach out to us directly.

Booking & Packages

Booking is simple and flexible. You can reach us through our Contact page, call us directly on +91 9717237624 or +91 9811275279, or email us at garhwal.exp@gmail.com. Once we understand your requirements — preferred destinations, travel dates, group size, and budget — we will prepare a customised itinerary and quotation for your review. To confirm the booking, a 30% advance deposit is required. The balance is typically due 15 days before departure.

Our standard packages include transportation (air-conditioned vehicles from the specified pickup point), hotel or guesthouse accommodation on a twin-sharing basis, meals as specified in the itinerary (generally breakfast and dinner), the services of an experienced driver and a local guide, and all applicable toll and parking charges. Entry fees to temples and national parks, personal expenses, tips, travel insurance, and helicopter charges (if applicable) are typically not included unless specified. All packages are customisable — just let us know what you need.

Absolutely. We specialise in building bespoke itineraries. Whether you want to combine a pilgrimage with a wildlife safari, add specific destinations off the standard route, or adjust the pace to allow for rest days at altitude, we are happy to accommodate. We cater to solo travellers, couples, families, and large groups. Religious groups undertaking the Char Dham or Do Dham yatras often benefit from our group-tailored packages with dedicated vehicles and guides.
Pilgrimage & Yatra

Yes, registration on the Uttarakhand government's official yatra portal (registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in) is mandatory for all pilgrims undertaking the Char Dham Yatra since 2021. Without a valid Yatra Parchi (registration slip), pilgrims will not be permitted beyond the checkpoints. We assist all our Char Dham package clients with the registration process as part of our service. Please provide us with Aadhaar card details and passport-size photographs of all travellers at the time of booking to ensure timely registration.

The Char Dham temples open in late April or early May and close in October or November (specific dates are announced annually by the temple committee). The best months for the yatra are May–June and September–October. May and June offer stable weather and clear mountain views, while September and October provide a post-monsoon freshness with fewer crowds. The monsoon months of July to mid-September carry increased risk of landslides and road closures and are best avoided by those with limited flexibility in their schedules. We read the weather forecasts carefully and advise clients accordingly.
Trekking & Adventure

Both the Kedarnath trek (16 km from Gaurikund) and the Valley of Flowers approach (14 km to Ghangaria, then 4 km to the valley) are classified as moderate difficulty. You do not need to be an experienced mountaineer, but a reasonable level of cardiovascular fitness helps significantly. The key challenge is altitude — Kedarnath sits at 3,583 metres and the Valley of Flowers area is around 3,600 metres. We recommend taking pre-departure walks of 4–6 kilometres daily in the month before your trip, staying hydrated, and building in at least one rest day for acclimatisation. For elderly pilgrims or those who cannot trek, pony and palki (doli) services are available at the Kedarnath trailhead, and helicopter services are available from multiple helipads.
Cancellation & Refunds

Our cancellation terms are designed to be fair while accounting for the costs we incur on your behalf when confirming bookings. In general: cancellations made more than 30 days before departure receive a refund of the advance less a processing fee. Cancellations between 15 and 30 days before departure attract a 50% cancellation charge. Cancellations within 15 days of departure are non-refundable. In cases of natural disasters, road closures, or government-imposed restrictions that prevent the journey from taking place, we work with clients on a case-by-case basis to reschedule or issue credit for a future tour. Please refer to our full Cancellation & Refund Policy page for complete details.

Himalayan weather is dynamic, and road conditions in Uttarakhand — particularly during and after the monsoon — can change without warning. Landslides, sudden snowfall at higher altitudes, or route closures imposed by the Border Roads Organisation sometimes affect itinerary execution. In such cases, our guides and drivers work to find the safest alternatives available and keep you informed at every step. If a particular destination becomes completely inaccessible due to conditions beyond our control, we will reschedule that portion of the trip or offer an appropriate adjustment. We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance before departure that covers trip interruption and medical emergencies.
Health & Safety

There are no strict age restrictions for the Char Dham Yatra as a pilgrimage. However, for the trekking portions — particularly the Kedarnath trek — the Uttarakhand government strongly advises that pilgrims above 60 years of age obtain a medical fitness certificate before undertaking the trek. Individuals with heart conditions, uncontrolled diabetes, severe anaemia, or respiratory disorders should consult their physician before travelling to high altitude. Children and elderly pilgrims can use pony or palki (palanquin) services for the Kedarnath trek. For Yamunotri, pony services are also available from Janki Chatti. Badrinath and Gangotri are accessible by road and suitable for all ages.

Altitude sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness or AMS) can affect anyone travelling above 2,500 metres, regardless of age or fitness. The key to prevention is ascending gradually and allowing your body time to acclimatise. Common symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath, and loss of appetite. If symptoms appear, rest and do not ascend further until you recover. If symptoms worsen — particularly if you experience confusion, loss of coordination, or fluid in the lungs — descend immediately and seek medical help. To prepare: avoid rushing the ascent, stay well hydrated (3–4 litres of water per day), avoid alcohol and sleeping pills, and carry basic medicines. Diamox (Acetazolamide) is sometimes prescribed for altitude acclimatisation — consult your doctor before taking it. Our guides are trained to recognise and respond to AMS.
