15 Days Mumbai and Maharashtra Grand Heritage Tour

Discover the cultural and historical highlights of Maharashtra and Goa on this 15-day heritage tour. Explore Mumbai’s iconic landmarks, Nashik’s temples, the ancient Ajanta and Ellora Caves, Pune’s historic sites, the hill stations of Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani, Kolhapur’s heritage and temples, and Goa’s Portuguese heritage and beaches with private transport and comfortable stays.

Day-by-Day Travel Plan

Maharashtra rarely gets credit for how much range it packs into one state: colonial cities, rock-cut caves, hill-station chill, and Goa's beaches all within reach of a single road trip. Garhwal Himalayan Expedition has put together this 15-day Mumbai - Maharashtra heritage tour to cover exactly that, moving from Mumbai's landmarks through the Deccan's ancient caves and Western Ghats hill towns, before winding down on Goa's coastline.

Route covered: Mumbai, Nashik, Aurangabad, Ajanta, Ellora, Pune, Mahabaleshwar, Kolhapur, Goa

Days 1-2: Mumbai

Arrive in Mumbai and settle into your hotel before an easy first evening at Marine Drive, the city's famous Queen's Necklace, with the Arabian Sea breeze and Colaba nearby if there's time to spare. Day two is a full sweep of the city's heritage, the Gateway of India, the Taj Mahal Palace exterior, Colaba's colonial streets, and the striking Victorian architecture of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. Crawford Market, a viewing stop at Dhobi Ghat, Mani Bhavan's Gandhi connection, and the Hanging Gardens round out the day before another evening at Marine Drive.

Day 3: Mumbai to Nashik (about 170 km, 4-5 hours)

The drive to Nashik sets up a temple-focused day, Trimbakeshwar Temple, one of India's revered Jyotirlingas, along with the Godavari River, Ram Kund, Panchavati, Sita Gufa, and Kalaram Temple. The evening is free for Nashik's local markets or simply resting up.

Day 4: Nashik to Aurangabad (about 200 km, 5 hours)

Depending on arrival time, Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) offers a stop at Bibi Ka Maqbara, often nicknamed the Taj of the Deccan, along with a look at nearby handicraft shops selling traditional Paithani and Himroo textiles, season and stock permitting.

Day 5: Ajanta Caves Excursion (about 100 km one way, full day)

An early start takes you to the Ajanta Caves, one of India's most remarkable rock-cut Buddhist sites. Ancient monasteries, prayer halls, sculpture, and centuries-old murals fill the complex, and it genuinely rewards a slow, unhurried pace. Return to Aurangabad by evening.

Day 6: Ellora Caves and Daulatabad Fort

Ellora brings together Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain cave traditions in one extraordinary complex, with the Kailasa Temple, carved entirely from a single rock face, standing out as the highlight of the entire tour. Daulatabad Fort follows, offering sweeping fortifications and panoramic views from its higher points, before you head back to Aurangabad for the night.

Day 7: Aurangabad to Pune (about 235 km, 5-6 hours)

Once you've checked into Pune, the evening opens with Shaniwar Wada and Lal Mahal if time allows, along with a walk through the old city and a proper taste of traditional Maharashtrian food.

Day 8: Pune Heritage and Culture Tour

A full day dedicated to Pune's history, the Peshwa-era fortifications of Shaniwar Wada, the Aga Khan Palace and its ties to India's freedom movement, the rock-cut Pataleshwar Cave Temple, the Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum, and the well-known Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple. Evenings are free for shopping, cafés, and Pune's lively FC Road stretch.

Days 9-10: Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani

The drive into the Western Ghats brings you to Mahabaleshwar, where Venna Lake, Mapro Garden, and the local market fill the first afternoon. Day two covers a string of scenic viewpoints, Arthur's Seat, Elephant's Head Point, Kate's Point, and Elphinstone Point, followed by a short drive to Panchgani for Table Land and, depending on season, a stop at the local strawberry farms.

Day 11: Mahabaleshwar to Kolhapur (about 180 km, 4-5 hours)

Kolhapur brings a distinctly different flavour to the trip, both culturally and literally. Visit the Mahalaxmi Temple, the New Palace Museum, and Rankala Lake, before an evening built around Kolhapur's famous food and traditional handicrafts.

Day 12: Kolhapur to Goa (about 220 km, 5-6 hours)

The drive crosses the Western Ghats one last time before delivering you into Goa. Once you've checked in, an evening at a nearby beach for sunset is the perfect way to mark the shift from heritage circuit to coastal unwind.

Day 13: North Goa Heritage and Beaches

Explore Goa's Portuguese heritage, the Basilica of Bom Jesus, Sé Cathedral, and the Old Goa heritage area, before continuing to Panjim, the colourful Fontainhas Latin Quarter, and the Mandovi riverfront. The afternoon shifts to the coast, Fort Aguada, Candolim, Calangute, and Baga Beach, each with its own distinct energy.

Day 14: South Goa Beaches and Culture

South Goa moves at a noticeably slower pace, Colva, Benaulim, and Palolem or a similar beach depending on your hotel's location. Optional extras like a spice plantation visit, a traditional Goan lunch, a sunset cruise, or some light water activities can round out your final full day.

Day 15: Departure from Goa

After breakfast and checkout, a private transfer takes you to Goa Airport or the railway station for your onward journey, closing out fifteen days that ranged from Mumbai's skyline to Goa's shoreline.
